ATHENS – Moxy Athens City opened its doors on 31 March 2022, bringing 201 guestrooms to the Greek capital. The hotel, located on Stadiou Street, is housed in the historic Saroglion Megaron, which once served as the city’s courts. Architectural firms Kokkinou-Kourkoulas and Divercity Architects led the renovation, drawing inspiration from the sacred olive tree, a symbol of Athena’s gift to Athens.

Upon arrival, guests check in at Bar Moxy and receive a complimentary “Got Moxy” cocktail. The lobby bar doubles as a communal hub, with a 24/7 self-service grab-and-go concept offering snacks, fresh juice, coffee, wine and beer. The 200+1 tech-savvy guestrooms feature walk-in showers, LED lighting and smart technology, with a muted colour palette accented by bold furniture and wall art by Athenian street artist B.

The rooftop penthouse offers expansive views of the Acropolis and can be booked as a suite or private entertainment venue. Public spaces are designed to be social and Instagrammable, with edgy graffiti-style walls, brightly coloured stools and playful lighting.

The hotel is targeting LEED Gold certification, which would make it the first “green” hotel in Greece to receive this distinction.

Behind the project are Dimand SA and Prodea Investments, with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). SWOT Hospitality, a leading hotel operation and development company, manages the property.

Prodea Investments CEO Dr Aris Karytinos said: “Following the first taste of the Moxy brand that we introduced to Greece through the Moxy Patra Marina, the first Moxy in the Mediterranean, it is time to bring to life the metropolitan version: the Moxy Athens City. The trendiest and most vibrant brand is setting off in the first green hotel building in Greece, placing its distinct mark on the Athens hospitality map through its unique architectural, environmental and esthetic features contributing to the regeneration of the Athens city center. It puts emphasis on sustainability, a pillar in PRODEA’s growth vision, and it is the new addition to a number of high-quality investments undertaken by PRODEA in the ever-growing hospitality sector, especially in our region.”

Dimand SA CEO Dimitris Andriopoulos stated: “We are very happy that Dimand actively contributes to the renewal of the Athens city center, with this great investment. I would also like to thank the Army Pension Fund/LAED, the Municipality of Athens, EBRD, Alpha Bank and Marriott International for their support and trust.”

SWOT Hospitality CEO Panos Constantinidis said: “Moxy Athens City falls into a special category of hospitality. We are proud to be entrusted with the management of the newest, most modern and most technologically advanced hotel in Athens.”

Moxy Athens City marks Marriott International’s ninth hotel opening in Athens.

Why it matters

This opening, reported here as an archival milestone, represented an early test of Marriott’s Moxy brand in a European capital with deep heritage. The hotel’s LEED Gold target signalled a growing emphasis on sustainability in Greek hospitality, while the involvement of Dimand, Prodea and EBRD underscored the role of institutional capital in Athens’ urban renewal. For travel-trade professionals, the property’s bar-centric check-in and tech-forward rooms illustrated how Moxy’s playful, efficiency-driven model could be adapted to a historic city centre.
