Rixos Hotels opened Rixos Tersane Istanbul on 2 September 2024, positioning the property as both a luxury hotel and a cultural venue in the city's historic Tersane district. The opening ceremony was attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, underscoring the Turkish government's emphasis on tourism as a strategic economic pillar.
Speaking at the ceremony, Erdoğan noted that Turkey's tourism revenue had reached $56 billion, with more than 26 million tourists visiting in the first half of 2023. "We see tourism as a strategic area," he said, adding that the country offers diverse opportunities across health, cultural, religious, and adventure tourism segments.
A dual mandate: hospitality and culture
Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Minister of Culture and Tourism, described the property's dual role at the opening. "This modern facility is a significant asset for both tourism and the cultural and arts scene of our city. It will serve Istanbul and its residents for many years, leaving guests with unique experiences and memories of Istanbul," he said.
The hotel is surrounded by a concentration of cultural landmarks, including the Atatürk Cultural Center, the Istanbul Cinema Museum, Galata Mevlevihanesi, and Hagia Sophia — a positioning that the government and Rixos have framed as central to the property's appeal to international visitors.
Istanbul's tourism backdrop at opening
At the time of the September 2024 opening, Minister Ersoy highlighted that Istanbul had welcomed approximately 10.5 million visitors in the first seven months of 2024, a 7% increase on the same period the prior year. Sea tourism visitors rose 46% over the comparable period, with Galataport Istanbul recording a 19% increase in cruise passenger numbers year-on-year.
Ersoy also noted that Istanbul's accommodation capacity had expanded significantly over the preceding 22 years, with the city now hosting more than 6,000 facilities and nearly 500,000 beds.
On the promotional front, Ersoy cited the Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) and the "Istanbul is The New Cool" campaign, which had aired in more than 200 countries, as key instruments in sustaining the city's global profile.
